facilities

At the center of the reservoir program are the water related facilities. These facilities will combine to withdraw water from the Mattaponi River during periods of high flow and store the water in the new lake. The lake will serve to settle the water and remove nutrients that would otherwise end up in the Chesapeake Bay. A pipeline that will be directionally drilled beneath Cohoke Creek and the Pamunkey River will deliver the settled water to Diascund Reservoir in New Kent County. Withdrawals from the existing pump station facilities on the Chickahominy River will subsequently be balanced by the new withdrawals from the Mattaponi River.

Project facilities include: 75 mgd intake and river pump station, 1.5 mile transfer pipeline, 1,526 acre lake, 1,700 foot long dam, primary and emergency spillways, 50-mgd reservoir pump station, 11.7 mile pipeline and outfall to Diascund Reservoir, road and utility relocation, and recreation facilities.

The current cost estimate for the engineering and construction elements of the water supply facilities is $145 million. Preliminary design drawings for each of the project facilities are available by selecting them from the map to the right
