mattaponi river
ecological monitoring program

The project partners have established an ecological monitoring plan to ensure that the Mattaponi River is not harmed by the proposed water withdrawals needed to supply the reservoir. American Shad spawning is a major concern for this project, and to minimize potential impacts to them, a state-of-the-art screened intake structure with 1-mm openings and an inflow velocity of less than 0.15 feet per second was designed to make certain that shad eggs and larvae are safe. In addition, the project partners will not withdraw water from the Mattaponi River during the height of the spawning season except under extreme drought conditions.  CNU currently monitors river quality at several points within the KWR watershed.  Click on the tabs below to view maps of the monitoring sites.
